The exhilarating sport of combined driving showcases the athleticism and skill of driving horses and ponies in three phases: dressage, marathon, and cones. Small in size but not talent, Classic American Shetland Bugsy Maloney and Shetland/Welsh cross Tony Da Pony compete with owner Mary Phelps in the top level of combined driving: FEI Advanced. Nicknamed the “Gangsters” for their playful names, their size allows them to make moves inside obstacles that larger ponies cannot.
While 2019 was Tony’s first season competing, his veteran teammates are showing him the ropes. Bugsy, Al Capony, and Kimba were awarded US Equestrian’s 2018 Horse of the Year awards for National Champion Shetland Open Competition and National Champion Pairs of Ponies. At Live Oak International, the USA’s biggest combined driving event, the Gangsters finished a close second in 2017 and 2018. Their strong 2019 showing qualified them for the FEI World Driving Championships for Ponies in Hungary, where they’ll represent the USA!
