This unique medal features St Agatha on one side and St Lucy on the other. Each of them is shown holding a palm branch which is a symbol for Christian martyrdom.
St Agatha was a beautiful, Christian girl in ancient Rome. When the emperor called for persecution of Christians, the local magistrate, Quinctianus, tried to blackmail Agatha for sex in return for his protection. When she refused his advances, he had her put in a brothel. After she refused to cooperate, she was beaten and tortured, including having her breasts removed. At the time of her death an earthquake struck leading to her patronage for protection from natural disasters.
St Lucy was also a young Christian Roman maiden. When her mother had a serious illness, she prayed at the tomb of St Agatha and she was healed. Lucy was later promised in marriage to a young pagan man.? When he found out she was a Christian, he denounced her to the emperor and she was sentenced to death.? Her eyes were torn out as part of her martyrdom, making her the patron saint of those with vision problems.
It was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece. It comes with a matching holy card in an organza gift bag, ready for gift-giving, and was made in the USA.
